Modern times, an enjoyable way of learning.

Nowadays, watching films at schools is not a common tool used by teachers. Sometimes they prefer to use technologies like Internet and also there are some teachers more traditional who make their classes based on textbooks. In this essay I hope to clarify why the movie is a good tool in terms of education because it can provoke that students could develop a critical thinking skill. In my opinion, Modern Times, the movie, is an attractive film and will be definitively useful in a classroom especially for students in high school. In some way the movie could persuade them to change their minds in relation with the issue of industrialization in terms of reflect about the way they have learnt the topic at school.
Through the movie, which is pretty interesting, students will know one part of the history; maybe the bad side of those years, when people were exploted by their employers, just to earn more money. In the film we can see how hard was to work on that factory, wich is a very important issue that we have not realize at all when we are studying in high school and we just learn the good consequences of indutrialization. For example, the economical improvement of some countries that in those times earned a lot of money.
To develop a good critical thinking at schools will be crucial in the learning process. It is always important to show to the students both sides of history. As teachers, our labor is to guide them to get their own conclusions. We should teach them and let them know as many points of view as possible to give them all the elements to build their own opinion. Considering that the movie shows one clear view point which is to try to let us realize the effects of the industrialization in the society, students should watch the film to stay aware of what they have been learning.
Moreover, I think that watching this film will be useful in terms of motivation. Many times teachers have to deal with students that do not care about anything and they show no interesting in learning any subject at school. But, bye the movie, in one hand, the students must stay awake because is necessary to look at the screen all the time to understand because the movie has no dialogues or any noise. Also, the principal character of the movie is someone known all over the world because of his talent, Charles Chaplin is an excellent actor, comedian and a fabulous director, so it could be a plus or an advantage in terms of interesting from the students. On the other hand, I believe that is extremely essential to have new methods or to innovate to carry out a class in an enjoyable way. Students need those kinds of reinforcements to make their learning process something attractive, in that way teachers could avoid boring classes and sleepy students. In addition, to fix the classes’ information given by teachers and have the opportunity to watch the film will enrich the knowledge of the students.
In my opinion watching movies, in general, represents a good way of teaching and learning at the same time. Is a tool which will be a benefit to the students, besides will improve the environment of the classroom making it more fun, exciting and so on, but also, it could be an splendid method of making especial and different classes. Moreover, learning history or any subject through movies is much more exiting to the students. Also, we have to consider that this is a film which represents an important period in the world history. Modern Times, it is more than a movie, the real story of many people who had to live the bad consequences of a period in which the rich people earn lots of money and poor people had to sacrifice themselves to earn money just to survive.
As future teachers we have to help the students to create or develop their critical thinking skills because they cannot live just with what teachers or adults say about history, politics or any topic that concerned the whole society.

Modern TiMes *

Through the movie we could see for example; how people were affected during this time. In terms of jobs, people should work very hard, long laboral working days to receive little money just to survive. In most of the factories people were working full of unfairness but unfortunately they didn’t have more options. Also, we could appreciate how people were unhappy with the political, economical and social situation of the country. That is the main reason why they were on strike, complaining, protesting on the street and so on. However, the situation did not improve so they had to stay working despite of the injustices. Moreover, in this time machines started to take the control, so was also a period of unemployment.

In the movie we saw that Chaplin got almost crazy because of too much work. So we could infer that maybe people were extremely stressed and getting nuts because of the exploitation and abuse of those times.

In general, Industrialization was a period that brought happiness to those people who were privileged in the society, for example, the owners of factories. But was an unhappy period to those exploited people who have not more opportunities to earn money.

Elizabeth, The golden age.

Based on the movie and the classes that we have had, I can say that the importance of Elizabeth affects in different aspects, such as: cultural, political and economical.
In general, in terms of influences, the monarchy had lots of benefits since Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake started to expand. One important fact is that during her reign literature was spread to many other lands because of the expansion. Elizabeth realized that was extremely important to conquer other places to make them colonies.
In that way, the reign would be bigger and powerful.

Another important issue its that Elizabeth was known as "The Virgin Queen". This is because she never wanted to get married. The main reason was that she replied many times that she was married with her nation (her people). Moreover she had to overcome the prejudice of some people who said that she was not able to govern the country.

Related to religion, as we know Elizabeth was protestant. Despite of her thoughts she allowed her people to believe in whatever they wanted. She was noted by protecting all the people just because they were human beings, so they deserved all the respect. I believe that she was loved because of that.

Elizabeth I is known as one of the best queens that England could ever had.

First of all, these concepts are complex to describe, despite of the fact we have been talking about them in classes...

Culture, is something that all human beings have. I think we are the ones who are constantly building our own culture. In terms of our beliefs, ideas, life styles and so on. Sometimes we could share our thoughts but not necessarily.

Civilization, I think is related to the organization of all the aspects that involves a community or nation. Economy, politics and sociocultural aspects in which people is the main character in terms of developing or stagnation of the society.

Critical thinking. For me, it is something you learn through the years, when you realize that people are always trying to change your own perspective or beliefs. It is something that you are able to develop by reading, talking, sharing ideas with others and so on. Finally , I think it is absolutely useful as a student, specially in our case as future teachers.

Dear all,

For this course I really hope to learn as much as possible about all aspects that involves a specific culture and how cultures are related by arts, thoughts, beliefs, etc. I would like to know how people and society are constantly evolving through the years because of science and technology and how that could affect to different cultures. Also, it is important to me that we could realize that as teachers we must know about all topics, because we are an example to everybody, anywhere. Besides I’m sure that knowledge is like a weapon that we have to be able to use during our lives.
